In honor of Halloween, we’re supposed to tell a real-life
scary story. Here’s mine: Once upon a time, there was a girl who had a very
tight deadline. Her book was due in October, at about the same time she had to
write a scary blog post. But she likes Halloween and so, undaunted, still wanted
to participate. Moral of the story: Nothing is scarier than deadlines.
But seriously, I wanted to do some fun post for Halloween, so I thought I’d tell you a little
about how I like to spend it. I confess, I really like to dress up. Let’s be
clear: I’ve never been one of those girls who find Halloween an excuse to don a
cheerleading uniform, French maid’s costume, or bunny tail. No judgment to
those who do—more power to you! Seriously, I’m just way too self-conscious myself.
So I prefer scary things. Or weird things. Sometimes funny things. Or maybe
even all three.
I’ve attached a few photos of me through the years, and as
you can see, as I am now, I was then. I was a zombie child. As a teen, I once went
as a Picasso painting. In the 90s, when the Spice Girls were having their
heyday, I grayed my hair, added lines on my face, and told people I was “Old
Spice.” Get it? Not many did, seeing as it wasn’t very clever and there wasn’t
much to get, but I had a blast tromping
around in my platform boots anyhow.
Some years I can’t manage it. Trick-or-treating while
pushing a double stroller full of sleepy Batman and sugar-addled Snow White
comes to mind. But now that my kids are a little older, I’m probably more into
it than I should be. I’m thrilled to say that my daughter is following in my
footsteps—last year we came this close
to convincing the guys that our family needed to go as the zombie Beatles.
Alas, my son was the lone standout. Can’t have zombie Beatles without zombie
Ringo.
Instead, she settled for zombie Southern belle, complete
with floppy hat and flopping skin. You’d be surprised how many people looked at
her but didn’t see her, telling her,
“Aren’t you pretty?” This angered the young zombie, but her toneless moans were
quick to tune them in.
As I write this, there’s a month left to decide what we’ll
do this year. My daughter and I are rallying the family to go as Star Wars
characters, not so much because we’re total nerds (even though, yeah, we’re
total nerds), but more because we found the awesomest Yoda dog costume ever,
and it’d be a missed opportunity not
to dress the dog as Yoda, right?
So that’s a peek at my Halloween. How do you like to spend
yours?

Dog costumes are always the best start for my costume. We found a police officer costume for our dog...so I got to be the prisoner. It was great.

Ah Star Wars characters would be awesome!! I'm jealous. I don't get to celebrate Halloween much anymore because I'm at college and get too busy, but I've been thinking of dressing up like I was going to a masquerade...maybe as a ghost of someone who died at a masquerade. We'll see!

It would definitely be a missed opportunity not to dress the dog as Yoda! And it's Star Wars, so that's awesome right there. Now, whose going to be Chewie??
