Ghost Haunts Microwave

As a kid, I loved scary movies.  As a grown up, I stay the heck away from them, with good reason.  First off, I live in a seventy year old cottage, complete with creaky floors, windows that don’t necessarily latch securely, and no neighbors.  Secondly, my husband works the night shift, which means I spend plenty of time alone at night in my house.  All the makings of a classic horror film.  So when we moved in, I figured it was best not to watch anything that might send my imagination to creepsville.  Little did I know it wouldn’t be a scary movie that would freak me out, but a mundane household appliance.
That’s right. My microwave was haunted.

A few months after we moved in, my husband and I were awakened in the middle of the night by a repetitive dinging sound.  We both got up to see what it was, and when we rounded the corner to the kitchen, it was lit up in the creepiest way possible-- by the light from the microwave.  This would be the microwave that was on, dinging, and apparently cooking “Frozen Vegetables.”  That’s what was flashing across the little strip anyway.  He tried to turn it off by mashing all the buttons at once.  No luck. We stood there in the kitchen, helpless against the microwave ghost until he finally unplugged the thing and walked it outside.  The next day we went and bought a new one, I pretended it never happened,  and  we’ve had no haunting incidents since.  I tell myself the ghost took a liking to that particular microwave and followed it to it’s new home.  It’s how I sleep at night.

Moonglass is available now from Simon & Schuster

Synopsis: From Jessi Kirby, a debut novel about confronting the past in order to move ahead.

I read once that water is a symbol for emotions. And for a while now, I've thought maybe my mother drowned in both.
Anna's life is upended when her father accepts a job transfer the summer before her junior year. It's bad enough that she has to leave her friends and her life behind, but her dad is moving them to the beach where her parents first met and fell in love- a place awash in memories that Anna would just as soon leave under the surface.

While life on the beach is pretty great, with ocean views and one adorable lifeguard in particular, there are also family secrets that were buried along the shore years ago. And the ebb and flow of the ocean's tide means that nothing- not the sea glass that she collects on the sand and not the truths behind Anna's mother's death- stays buried forever.

  1. Lol... the first i've heard of about a haunted microwave!

My aunt was once convinced her frig was haunted b/c stuff in it would disappear. Her husband set up a video camera and they figured out.... it was the dog! it was a Lab/golden retreiver mix and she would open the frig and help herself to whatever she could reach. The thing that kept her out of trouble was that she was very tidy, she'd eat the entire thing, wrappings included so there was no evidence and she would shut the door!

Smart, yet very fat dog :)

  3. I used to live in a house that was across the street from a cemetery. I absolutely swear that sometimes if I turned my head just right, I could see a shadow on one of our stair landings. It was always in the same place, never anyplace else and no one else ever saw it. But I know it was there.

I really was glad when we moved. lol

  4. I'm glad you walked the microwave outside; it could have kept beeping after you unplugged it. That would have upped the creepy factor.

  8. HAHA omgosh a haunted microwave. Creepy! I love it. I could never live out in a cottage like that with no one else around and home alone at night... NO way. But if I had to, I would never watch horror movies either.

  9. lol I had a similar experience with a microwave on my honeymoon last year! The buzzer kept going off for no reason all night. We actually had to unplug it to get it to stop!

  10. Luckily, the ghostly microwave incident only happened once. Could you imagine how creepy it would have been if it continued to cook "Frozen Vegetables" night after night.

  20. Very very weird! I've never heard of a haunted microwave! Living where you live probably does help and being a lone too... I never sleep when my husband is gone overnight - - too much of a scardy-cat lol. Maybe it was the brand of the microwave that was haunted lol??

  25. In my house the microwave would never make anyone get out of bed. There are so many boys in the house we would just blame one of them no matter what time it was. not one of them would do frozen vegetables, though. :)

  26. LOL! That is kind of funny! I'm the same way though - I don't watch them anymore because I have to be alone sometimes and I just can't handle that sort of things anymore! I find things more and more scary as I get older! ;)

Omg!! Aside from being weird/scary that is actually kind of funny lol, but it's a good thing you did catch it when you did & got a new one, in case of any fire hazard :O

  29. I love my microwave! I would hate if it was haunted. Also, I'd be terrified.

Though I'm positive my house is haunted. On the plus side, our ghost has been living with us for like 10 years with no issues - just a few scares here and there when we see him.
