Mia's brother disappeared over a year ago, and agents from the IIA began policing people's movements through dimensions. She'd trusted Dr. Bleeker from the local university when he'd told her the IIA were the bad guys. But even a girl with an extraordinary ability to sense things can make mistakes.

Now two people are dead, and as a portal gatekeeper for the IIA, Mia needs to find Dr. Bleeker before he hurts anyone else. And her boyfriend Regulus, an Agent for the IIA, carries secrets of his own. Between learning about weaponry, finding the perfect dress for the winter formal, and catching bad guys, who has time to fit in?

Seventeen-year-old Mia Taylor, gatekeeper to an interdimensional portal, wants nothing more than to heal from her romance gone wrong. Illegally falling for her co-worker Regulus had been a huge mistake. But when Regulus goes rogue to hunt down a murderer, Mia must forget her broken heart and use her unique abilities to save him. Traveling across dimensions, she enters a strange and hostile world where a rebel faction holds the key to their escape. Her gift of synesthesia is in high demand, and a secret organization of the otherworldly kind has her in their sights. But sabotage and murder may be the least of her worries. Her ex-boyfriend wants a relationship. Her dad wants her to act normal. Her friends want her to stop moping. Who knew faking happy would be the easiest part of senior year?

Love, Crushes and Angst in Whispering Woods

One of the things I love most about writing YA is the intense relationships between characters. In the Whispering Woods series, the main character Mia falls for a guy named Regulus. It's not a case of insta-love. There's no doubt that there's some physical attraction when she meets him. What's not to like about a guy who is mysterious, aloof, driven, powerful, and well...hot?

Let's face it. Sometimes the attraction disappears as soon as the person opens his/her mouth. Don't you hate it when that happens?

Mia learns that Regulus's sincerity and unique personality is just as alluring as his military-trained body and oh-so-perfect face. They have different goals and ideas about things, but they're also very much alike. Both are strong, stubborn, and loners. They also guard their hearts.

Many readers mention the other guys in my series. I don't consider my story a love triangle story. Still, there are readers who absolutely love the other guys in Mia's life and therefore root for those guys. Austin, a best friend, has a crush on Mia and doesn't hide it. Arizona, Regulus's wing man, is the funny and flirty guy we'd all like to hang out with on a Saturday night.

Ultimately, we can't always pick the person we are attracted to in life (or in a story). Physical and emotional chemistry is really a fickle creature. The more intense and unexpected, the better the story is for the reader. I hope you have fun with my characters!

  1. Chemistry is definitely one of the most important aspect in a fictional romance. If I don't feel their attraction I don't really get into the romance. Great post ladies! :)
