Synopsis: In the city that never sleeps the Chronicles continue…
Serving coffee is temporary, just like Casey's year off from school. She’s going to come up with a plan to stay in New York City and go back to college, and that plan does not involve dating a paranormal creature—let alone two.
Running the supernatural society of New York is not as fun as it sounds, especially when you still have to answer to your ex-girlfriend’s fiancé. Toby doesn’t mean to bring Casey into the chaos of his life, but he can't resist the girl who makes him smile when he thought no one else ever could.
Jared's in New York checking out a security risk for his best friend, the king. He plans to return to New Orleans quickly, but not if it means losing his chance with the brunette who pretends she wants nothing to do with him.
In over her head with a bunch of winged creatures who most definitely are not angels, Casey has to figure out who to trust with her life and maybe her heart.
Review: 4.5 Stars - Soar is the first in the Empire Chronicles series from author Alyssa Rose Ivy. This series is a spin off from her amazing Crescent Chronicles trilogy and follows both new characters and secondary characters we’ve previously met, yet this time they have a chance to be front and center to share their story. I’m a huge fan of this author and I LOVED the Crescent Chronicles, so I couldn’t wait to dive right into Soar and I wasn’t disappointed! There’s just the right amount of drama, angst, romance and broody men with wings – Pteron – to keep readers entertained and engrossed in the story.
I loved the characters this series is now focusing on and I also enjoyed having the chance to see where everyone is in their lives and what these paranormal creatures - Pteron are up against this time around.
In this series opener we are introduces to college student and barista Casey. She’s trying to save some money to help pay for college. Living in a room that’s as big as a closet in her cousins apartment in New York City her life changes pretty quick when taking out the trash at work one night. She doesn’t believe what she see’s and keeps part of it to herself. It’s in that moment that things start to snowball and the story feels like it goes by in the blink of an eye!
There are two guys that are front and center this time around – Toby and Jared. They couldn’t be more opposite from each other and they throw Casey for a loop time and time again. While Toby is somewhat quiet and awkward once he starts to get to know Casey he begins to comes out of his shell. He’s dealing with heartbreak and is trying to figure out what’s next. He’s now in charge of the state of New York when it comes to paranormals and when killings start happening it’s up to him and his employees to get it under control.
Then we have Jared. He’s the same cocky, sure, arrogant guy we met in the original trilogy. He likes women and likes to keep his options always open. That is until he see’s Toby with Casey and he loves pushing Toby’s buttons at every possible chance.
There’s a big bad out there and it’s up to Toby, Jared, the King and his entourage to figure out who’s behind the attacks and how they are going to stop it before humans find out the truth that there is in fact more out there.
The writing is as always fantastic! The story is filled with action, swoonable moments and lots of flirting that if one wasn’t happening another was so there wasn’t anything lacking at all. I loved the story from beginning to end, I loved getting a chance to revisit this amazing world and see it through another humans eyes.
The tug of war between Toby and Jared wasn’t too much but I can see that there might be some more trouble brewing with revelations that happen at the end of this installment. There were some comments made that make me think, with the socking turn of events that happened for Casey and her new Pteron and shifter friends that Toby, Jared and Casey have more to worry about now more than ever. I however don’t understand one thing completely so I’ll have to keep an eye out for more info on this one question I have as I continue to read.
All in all, I loved it! I love this author and I can’t wait to find out what happens next. I do HIGHLY recommend this author and her previous series – The Crescent Chronicles AND this book as well. It is a “New Adult” title with themes that would be better suited for older readers so please keep that in mind. Paranormal fans will LOVE these books. Trust me, you don’t know what you’re missing! Happy Reading!
