Synopsis: Emma decided to skip the gym and went home early. It was the last easy decision she made because she found her roommate being raped by the boyfriend. She had two choices. Call the cops and be killed by his family’s mafia connections or kill him first and hope to survive. There was no choice to her. She killed the bastard first and went to the one person who could protect her. Carter Reed. He’s a weapon for the rivaling mafia family, but he’s also Emma’s secret. Not only was he best friends with her brother, but she’s the reason he became that weapon in the first place.
Review: 4 Stars - Carter Reed isn’t the first title I’ve read by author Tijan, but I can say that after reading this book it won’t be my last. Its dark story is fast paced, making this a page turner that’ll keep readers on the edge of their seats to see just what’ll happen next with this fantastic alpha male and female protagonist.
Emma is forced to do something drastic, yet desperate, and all to keep her and her roommate from being killed. In the blink of an eye and a choice she would make time and time again their lives are in put in extreme danger forcing them to run. See, Emma didn’t just save her friend, she brought about severe consequences for her actions from her roommates boyfriends family who just so happen to be in the mob.
For me Emma was strong, but a mess at the same time. She’s dealing with her choices, trying to keep her and her roommate alive and trying to deal with all the emotions that are ravaging her body, mind, heart and soul after such a traumatic event. As I said she’s strong, but this event brings back things from her past that break open old wounds and force her to find someone from her past, someone she hasn’t seen in a very long time, someone who might just be as dangerous as the people she’s running from.
Carter Reed… how do I describe him? He’s dark, dangerous, lethal and 100% alpha male. Carter is someone who’s made a life for himself in the mob. He’s untouchable and everyone wants a piece of him.
When Emma reaches out to her friend from the past – Carter – to help save her from the trouble she’s in both of their lives are turned upside down while dealing with the aftermath of Emma’s choices. Carter is trying to change a few things in his life; he wants to protect Emma and goes above and beyond to make sure she’s safe.
As I mentioned above this book is dark and it’s even sometimes twisty but wow does Tijan have a great handle on writing one heck of an Alpha male! While there was times where it felt the writing was a bit rushed or the flow of the story didn’t go as smoothly as I would have liked, there was enough with the characters, plot and action that I was able to more than enjoy this title.
There are so many amazing quotes from this title as well. So many times I had to reread sentences and full paragraphs because of how powerful they were, to not only other characters, but for me as a reader. I was often on the edge of my seat and there were even times I found myself holding my breath because I didn’t know what was right about to happen next.
From the first scene of the book, which was haunting and so dark, right through to the end I wanted nothing more but for the story to continue. I didn’t want the book to end. And when it did end, I felt like I had run a marathon. This is one of those books that once you read those first few pages you don’t want to put down. Trust me, it’ll be hard for you to put it down, so be prepared for that.
All in all I loved the dark bits. I loved the angst; I loved the parts of the story built around the mob. I loved the alpha male, I loved how fast paced and dangerous this title was and I’m sure others will love this one too. I highly recommend this title to those who are looking for something different when it comes to a “New Adult” contemporary title. This might be a contemporary title with some romance but the twist of the mob and the dangerous side of the lives of these characters gives this title enough of a unique take that it shouldn’t be missed. Read and enjoy!
