Megan's Top Five Time Travel Stories

Time travel is tricky to pull off, as I learned firsthand while writing EARTH & SKY. Thankfully I had some excellent sources of inspiration to help guide my way!

-THE TIME TRAVELER'S WIFE by Audrey Niffenegger - There probably aren't many people who haven't read (or at very least heard) of this book, and there's a good reason for that. Ultimately a love story between an accidental time traveler and a woman who's met him before he meets her (it makes sense once you've read it), the time travel element is well-integrated into the story with enough scientific explanation to allow suspension of disbelief, the characters are relatable and their relationship touching, and the author doesn't shy away from the sometimes brutal outcomes of their tenuous situation.

-NIGHT WATCH by Terry Pratchett - My favorite Discworld book, in which police commander Sam Vimes is sent back in time and must take on the role of mentoring his own younger self while keeping up a false pretense and trying to tame a rebellion. Pratchett's work is always humorous and smart, but NIGHT WATCH has a lot of heart, too, delving into Vimes' growth as a character and the history of his city.

-SINGULARITY by William Sleator - A different, very creative sort of time traveling. The teenaged main character has always felt in the shadow of his more outgoing and assertive twin, so when he discovers a shed in which time moves differently from the world outside, he uses it to age himself ahead of his brother while confronting an otherworldly presence within. The conflict between the brothers is vividly drawn and the mechanics of the shed follow a speculative but plausible line of physics.

-WHEN YOU REACH ME by Rebecca Stead - A wonderful science fiction mystery about a sixth grader dealing with sudden odd behavior from her best friend, the appearance of a strange homeless man in her neighborhood, and anonymous notes that start appearing in her possessions that reveal more than anyone should know. The best things about this book are the well-drawn character relationships and the slow reveal of the answers to the mystery, which fit together perfectly.

-The Oxford Time Travel series by Connie Willis (including the short story "Fire Watch" and the novels DOOMSDAY BOOK and TO SAY NOTHING TO THE DOG, all of which are excellent, as well as BLACKOUT and ALL CLEAR, which I haven't read yet to recommend but are probably quite good also :) ) - Connie Willis's stories about university time travel researchers cover a wide range of territory, and they do it incredibly well. DOOMSDAY BOOK is as heart-wrenching as TO SAY NOTHING OF THE DOG is wryly amusing, the former dealing with historical and future pandemics (and proving inspiration for my Fallen World trilogy) and the latter a romantic comedy of errors involving Victorian times.

Bonus mention: If you want to check out some time travel-y movies too, I recommend 12 MONKEYS, BACK TO THE FUTURE, TIME BANDITS, and TIMECRIMES.

Review: 4 Stars - Resisting Ruby Rose, the second title in author Jessie Humphries Ruby Rose series picks up right where the first book left off. If readers thought the first book was action packed, they haven’t seen anything yet! This second book breaks out of the typical “second book in a series” mold as Humphries writes a full story to keep readers on their toes.

When I read the first book I thought it was pretty good. Not the best thing I’ve read but I was intrigued and felt a bit invested in the characters to want to read more. I wasn’t disappointed to say the least! This second installment was a lot more than I was expecting and kept me on my toes the whole time.

I didn’t know what was going to happen next, who was involved or who might make it out alive. I came out the other side even more so invested in Ruby’s life and those around her. I was rooting for her the whole time and with the additional layer that was added to her story with two characters – Skryker and Quinn, you knew there was going to be trouble around every choice this fierce character made

And then you have Ruby’s boyfriend Liam who we meet in the first book and man, what the heck is going on with him? He killed me in this book. I was so devastated and confused and the anger I felt was almost enough to make me want to throw my Kindle across the room. I mean serious, Liam? SERIOUSLY?!

Ruby is without a doubt a character with a dark side. She’s fighting to remain who she is yet has people pushing and pulling her from every side and is bound to make mistakes, and I mean she’s a teen girl, so mistakes will happen even without all she has going on around her.

With the introduction of new characters and many pieces of the story still left to uncover I foresee yet another book to follow, which I’m looking forward to because, well, there’s so much I’d like to see wrapped up.

If readers are looking for two great books with lots of action, mystery and teenage angst, look no further. YA and adult readers alike will find that Ruby is an old soul and had to do a lot of growing up in her short life to find her where she is now. She’s a multi layered character who knows her way around a gun and isn’t afraid to use it. Enjoy!

Review: 3 Stars - Killing Ruby Rose is the first title in the Ruby Rose Series from debut author Jessie Humphries and takes readers on one bumpy, thrilling, mysterious and dangerous ride for a high schooler who’s looking for closure and answers.

Teenage Ruby Rose if one smart cookie and has her eye on the top spot at school. Along with her epic shoe collection she’s ready to take on the world. With a best friend by her side to help her come to terms with the death of her father, Ruby is hiding a somewhat alter-ego which takes her into somewhat of an extremely dangerous game which quickly spirals out of control.

One thing about Ruby is she is tough. She’s trained in martial arts and knows her way around a gun. She owns her own along with a permit to carry. And while she believes she’s prepared to tackle her secret side project she’s working on in memory of her father, she’s quickly going to find out just how far out of her league she truly is.

I liked Ruby, stupid choices and all, I liked her. She reminded me just a smidge of Veronica Mars - more so how she followed and watched her prey and her case files… but Ruby was a bit reckless when you compare the two. Both characters also have fathers in law enforcement so that was another small bit where I could see a small similarity. I LOVE Veronica Mars so having a chance to see even the slightest comparison between characters is a plus.. however in the end I didn’t LOVE this one as I love VM.

The part in the story that rubbed me the wrong way time and time again was Ruby’s mother. I hated the lies. I hated how absent she was in her life and I hated her part in Ruby’s story. The hate percolated just under the surface from beginning and that boil grew until it finally exploded at the end of the book. This is one of those stories where the parent is an epic failure and I hated her. Which you can say if an author can illicit such strong feelings in a reader that’s huge props to the author, and I’d more than agree with this, yet it went way too far and there was just no coming back.

The love interest in the story was prefect! Just what she needed and I loved these two together. However these was time I found even HIM creepy beyond creepy and wondered what the heck was up with him! I didn’t know if he was part of it all or not???

One thing the author did do very well was create a great base character(s) for the continuing story. I have no idea where she might go next and what might happen but I am curious to find out. Oh and there’s some humorous moments to this one too. Ruby is without a doubt quirky at times and I look forward to more of that from her in the next book.

All in all this one was very entertaining and suspenseful, the characters had their ups and downs but the twists and turns made up for some of the rough bits. I think readers of YA and fans of mysterious and stories with suspense will love this one. The second book – Resisting Ruby Rose is set to release late October 2014. Enjoy!

An Interview with Alix Keener, the Main Character in Perennial, Ryan Potter’s Latest Novel

I recently had the pleasure of speaking with 17-year-old Alix Keener at Zeppelin Coffee in the posh Detroit suburb of Beaconsfield, Michigan. Intelligent, witty, and kind, Alix talked about the mystery of something known only as Perennial and the various ways it has changed her life.

Ryan Potter: We keep hearing about how different you and your Perennial story are. What can you tell us about that?

Alix Keener: Perennial came to me in a vivid dream the morning before my senior year began. Up until that point, my life goals were crystal clear. A full academic ride to the University of Michigan followed by medical school and a career as a pediatrician. But all of that changed the moment I met Lewis Wilde on the first day of school. Everything I thought I knew about life and the world turned to chaos within 24 hours.

RP: Are you saying you’ll never go to college and become a doctor?

AK: That’s a good question. Yes, I still plan on doing those things, but let’s just say I have some otherworldly business to tend to first.

RP: Fair enough. Are you in love with Lewis Wilde?

AK: Boy, you don’t beat around the bush, do you? (Laughter) My relationship with Lewis is…complicated. Lewis is the exact opposite of what my parents would want for me. Lewis has been in a lot of trouble and hasn’t had an easy life, but he’s a beautiful person inside and out. He’ll always hold a very special place in my heart.

RP: What can tell you tell us about Blade?

AK: Like Perennial and Lewis, Blade came into my life unexpectedly. Right now Blade is the best friend I have. At the moment, I trust Blade more than anything or anybody else in the world. Blade was made for me. I have a feeling we’ll be close for a long time. Maybe forever.

RP: Do you trust Blade more than Lewis?

AK: I’d rather not answer that.

RP: Do you trust Blade more than your dad?

AK: Can we move on to something else, please?

RP: Sure. Are you aware of a shadowy figure sometimes referred to as Vagabond?

AK: I am. Vagabond is my mentor but we have an uneasy alliance. He’s incredibly wise and powerful, but we don’t always agree on things. I never asked for any of this brutal Perennial business. Vagabond made it happen. He picked me. Because of that, I’ll always harbor some anger toward him.

RP: Last question, Alix. What is Perennial?

AK: That’s the billion-dollar question, isn’t it? The only way to learn about Perennial is to read Perennial. But I have to warn everybody: Perennial is all around you and will change your life forever.

Review: 4 Stars - Ink My Heart, the second title in author Jean Haus’ Luminescent Juliet series follows lead singer and forever flirt Justin and tattoo artist Allie. If readers thought that the characters followed in the first book in the series In The Band had issues, you haven’t read nothing yet as you follow the dual point of view between Justin and Allie.

Justin has it all as a lead singer. He’s one of the biggest flirts and has no reason to fall in love or settle down. He likes to play the field and being a singer with good looks gives him everything he needs when it comes to women.  While he might be playing the field and looking for a new girl for the night he has issues that broke my heart.

Allie is a tattoo artist, college student and business owner. She also has issues that prevent her from looking for anything serious when it comes to a partner. She has a past that has scared her emotionally and she wants to focus on her future and her art.

When the two meet they have different things on their minds. Justin wants a night with the hot tattoo artist and Allie just wants to hurry and get through her appointment tattooing Justin so he’ll leave her alone. She knows he isn’t capable of giving her what she needs so why bother?

One of the things I loved most about this title is the fact that it’s written in both Justin and Allies points of view. I applaud the author Haus for doing this because they each had such a strong, emotional back story that would have felt lacking if I wasn’t able to have both sides.

My heart was broken for Justin and Allie more than once and I was shocked at how each of these characters dealt with their pain and how when they found each other, let those walls slip a bit and grew and changed because of who they were when the other was around.

I loved the story from beginning to end and I’ll admit that I liked this one more than the first title. I felt that these characters were a bit older, more well rounded and their pain was conveyed even more so on the page.

I loved Ink My Heart, I loved the characters and I’d love to see more of their story because there’s one huge twist that I’m eager to see how Justin continues to handle and grow because of it. Fans of the first book or fans of a great contemporary about musicians shouldn’t pass this one by. Readers will love these band boys and their issues so go on, one-click these titles today!

I really enjoyed Ryan's previous title - EXIT STRATEGY, which you can check out my review for HERE (It's one of my earlier reviews so please be kind).
