Review: 4 Stars - Familiar Ground, the stand alone “New Adult” title by author Michelle Lynn takes readers on a dual point of view journey with two families as they struggle to come to terms with their lives past and present after the affects of addiction.

First off, I’d like to commend Lynn on writing a story that stays honest to the affects of addiction to those who are suffering and the family members who love them. She’s taken two families who are living with the aftermath of a family member’s addiction and how these two families are intertwined in their struggles, pain and anger.

I’m thankful that this title was written in dual points of view between because there were two families who were involved and two families who were dealing with two very different outcomes due to addiction. I believe that without the dual point of view the story would have been lacking so when I had a chance to see things for both sides I was not only excited because I always love reading from more than one point of view, but I knew that this would be important to the story.

Leah has been dealing with her brother’s addiction for years. She tries to be strong and always gives in to his requests. Knowing she can’t continue she’s not happy when he calls again asking to see her. She gets more than she’s bargained for when he arrives at her door step. She’s a strong character with a huge heart and takes on a huge favor from her brother with the hopes he’s finally hitting his bottom and is serious about getting clean.

Adam is dealing with the devastation of losing a sister. He is also thrown for a loop by Leah’s brother Shane with shocking news no one saw coming. He’s kind, strong and has always given in to his sisters requests for help. She was a weakness for him and he wanted nothing more than for her to get the help she needs and come back to the loving family she walked out on years ago.

When Leah and Adam’s paths cross the two are drawn together with their shared pain and the fact that they each know what the other has been dealing with.

As mentioned above, the story is well written and the emotions flow from these characters as they try to navigate their new lives with the revelations and turn of events they are each trying to deal with. There’s more to the story than just addiction, it’s about healing and trust and gaining the important things back that addition takes away from those afflicted with the illness and the families and friends they’ve left along the way.

I really liked this one because I could relate to a few things throughout the story and I liked the fact that Lynn didn’t gloss over the important issues and took a somewhat taboo subject and wrote a story with as much dignity as possible for such a horrible illness. Book lovers who enjoy stand alone contemp titles will highly enjoy this title. I know I’m looking forward to reading more from this author in the future. Happy Reading.

About the Author:

Michelle moved around the Midwest most of her life, transferring from school to school before settling down in the outskirts of Chicago ten years ago, where she now resides with her husband and two kids.  She developed a love of reading at a young age, which helped lay the foundation for her passion to write.   With the encouragement of her family, she finally sat down and wrote one of the many stories that have been floating around in her head. When she isn’t reading or writing, she can be found playing with her kids, talking to her mom on the phone, or hanging out with her family and friends.  But after chasing around twin preschoolers all day, she always cherishes her relaxation time after putting the kids to bed.
