Title: Rev (Bayonet Scars #3)
Author: J.C. Emery
Publisher: Left Break Press (May 19th, 2014)
Add to: Goodreads
Order here: Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Amazon UK

NOTE: This is a "New Adult" novel. Due to mature content this title is recommended for ages 17+

Synopsis: Everyone belongs somewhere. Even the misfits.

With the looming threat from the Mancuso Crime Family, the Forsaken Motorcycle Club is preparing for a war that could destroy them. Grady, the club’s Sergeant-at-Arms, knows that love makes you weak, and he has zero interest in adding to his liabilities-- especially now. He's already got his teenage daughter who keeps him on his toes and a beef within the club that could fracture his relationship with a fellow brother for good.

For Holly Mercer, her life is finally getting on track and the last thing she wants is trouble from her hometown’s resident outlaws. Keeping her nose clean is easier said than done, when suddenly she finds herself embroiled in club business. Holly might like the idea of being with a real-life bad boy, but even being in the same room with tough-as-nails Grady flusters her.

Review: 5 Stars - Rev, the third title in the Bayonet Scars series from author JC Emery is the continuing story of the members from the Forsaken Motorcycle Club. Trouble continues to reach far and wide for all in the MC and those who find themselves close to the club. JC took things up a notch in what has become my favorite title in this ever growing series.

For me, these titles have been very entertaining because of the stress and crazy characters JC has written. With each book I’ve liked it better than the last and I’m not sure how she’s going to outdo herself with future titles. However I know she will, I have faith because with the story that’s laid out for us and the quality characters in this installment, there is no going anywhere but up!

Grady was more than an ass. It’s who he is and he has good reason to be. He’s dealing with so much after the end of Thrash and even with the events that started this snowball effect that happened in Ride… it’s just hard for me to see him as being anything other than being the cranky pain in the arse he is. Yet, he’s become my favorite because under all that gruffness he portrays to everyone there’s so much more to him. From the beginning to the end you can see Grady evolve. Even in the smallest increments he changes and its then readers find out just how strong he really is.

This time around there’s another threat other than the Mancuso Crime Family so readers get double the pleasure and double the stress with the turn of each page. It’s something you can always count on when it comes to JC’s writing – the vast array of emotional feelings.

Another thing that I’ve noticed is that the writing is becoming so much tighter. You can tell just how much JC knows her characters and how much they are in control of the story. I was lucky enough to do somewhat of a beta read for this title and by the time I received it there wasn’t much she needed to change or work on. The plot was so tight and on coarse that what readers received in the finish product was pretty much exactly what I read as well.

One thing that I’d like to mention is that in this title is there a rape scene that I was warned about before reading. I wasn’t told anything other than there was something I’d be reading that might bother me. Something like this I usually can’t read because it does bother me. It’s not something that’ll ever change, it’s just who I am and while it was hard to read it wasn’t as graphic as it could have been and it didn’t last pages and pages to be drawn out. I guess I’m mentioning this because I can only assume how hard it was for JC to write and also how hard it was to include such a controversial scene into one of her stories yet how she did it was, in my opinion one of the best ways to actually include something such as this. I was indeed affected by it, but I had prepared myself for something much, much worse and I was glad at how it was handled.

I believe this scene is also an idea of more to come for certain characters, so sometimes the harder parts to writing are needed for the greater outcome.

In the end I LOVED IT! JC has written something pretty amazing here and with her characters and story getting stronger with each book, I can’t help but be proud of all she’s accomplished thus far and what she’s going to accomplish on into the future.

This is an author that should be on more readers’ radars and not one to pass by. I HIGHLY recommend this series to anyone who loves a gritty story, with amazing writing and characters that only get better with each installment. Fans of MC’s, alpha males and action packed stories shouldn’t miss this series! 18 and old readers are suggested for content. So, what the heck are you waiting for??? As of this moment, Ryan, Duke and Grady are waiting for you to meet them. Enjoy!

About the Author:

As a child, JC was fascinated by things that went bump in the night. As they say, some things never change. Now, as an adult, she divides her time between the sexy law men, mythical creatures, and kick-ass heroines that live inside her head and pursuing her bachelor's degree in English. JC is a San Francisco Bay Area native, but has also called both Texas and Louisiana home. These days she rocks her flip flops year round in Northern California and can't imagine a climate more beautiful.

JC writes adult, new adult, and young adult fiction. She dabbles in many different genres including science fiction, horror, chick lit, and murder mysteries, yet she is most enthralled by supernatural stories-- and everything has at least a splash of romance.

He has to have her, and he’s not going to stop until he makes her his. Especially now that someone else threatens to take her away.

One time is all he needs, and he’s never been known to fail, but he’s also never had to fight for a woman’s affections. Only one man will win their way into Kate’s heart, but which one will intercept the other and take what they want? Which one will she choose?

EXCERPT:

We pulled into the parking lot of the practice field and I shut off my car, the tension in the air crackling like fire. When I turned to look at her, it was like her stormy gray gaze could see right through me. There were a shit ton of things I wanted, but nothing as much as leaning forward to kiss those lips of hers.

With her breaths coming fast and low, she licked her dry lips and shook her head. “Cooper, we can’t.”

Bending over the center console, I glanced down at her lips and murmured low, “Yes we can, Kate, and I’m going to make sure we do.”

Check out my review for: Daughter of Isis (Descendants of Isis #1)
Synopsis: “. . . the Sons would never just let him go—alive.”

Seth O’Keefe has broken the laws of his god. He never thought he would sacrifice his own future to protect a Daughter of Isis. But when the Sons of Set discovered Natti is the Secret Keeper, he had no choice. Now, Seth and Natti are on the run from his father, who wants nothing more than to see Seth dead. With no allies, Seth turns to the Daughters of Isis for help, hoping they would protect Natti. But when they meet the Daughters, he discovers a secret that puts both their lives in more danger. Low on options, Seth sees only one possibility for survival. He must help Natti solve an ancient puzzle and find the secret name of Ra.

Natara “Natti” Stone is having a hard time swallowing the truth. She can’t believe what she has learned in the past twenty-four hours: Seth is a Son of Set blessed with charm; she is a Daughter of Isis blessed with a sliver of Ma ‘at; the locket her grandmother gave her holds an ancient Egyptian secret linking to Osiris and Isis. That along with being tortured and brutalized by the Sons of Set, she can hardly hold herself together. Thank God for Seth’s touch! That warm, tingling sensation that drowns it all out. Yet her heart struggles to stay focused. She must quickly embrace her destiny before the secret name of Ra falls into the wrong hands.

*Note: Content for Upper YA*

Review: 3.5 Stars - Son of Set, the second book in the Descendants of Isis series by author Kelsey Kitch continues her unique story right where she left her characters and readers at the end of the first book.

Ketch doesn’t waste any time and jumps in head first with Seth and Natti’s story. The two were dealing with some serious consequences due to choices and actions from the first book and I was happy with the pacing of the story and where the author took her characters from one page to the next.

These two are dealing with even more and have a lot riding on staying alive and figuring out clues to keep them and some pretty huge secrets from falling into the wrong hands.

I liked this one more than the previous book. The characters felt stronger, yet the same. The story and plot felt more rounded and while there were hints of the issues I didn’t care for in the first book there wasn’t enough to affect the story for me this time around.

Seth’s character waffles back and forth about a decision and that felt a bit over done for me. Since it continued to happen repeatedly it didn’t sit right and I wanted to say he was crying wolf. The first time my mind and heart couldn’t take it. The second time I thought okay… this is it, my hearts going to break and then the third time I didn’t believe it. There were actually a few other things for him as a character that I wanted to scream at him about and I didn’t care for but it hit me suddenly that Seth doesn’t know any better and this is all new to him, just as so much is new to Natti.

Ketch continues to take readers on a ride laced with Egyptian lore she’s made her own in this refreshing story. She also continues to weave riddles and clues from the old world into her new world which has been a high selling point for me as a reader, which will yet again bring me back to find out what happens next for these two characters and the fight they are going to be up against next.

Fans of YA should who are on the lookout for something different should pick these books up and give them a try. There’s something to love for just about everyone. And while this is a YA title due to content I’d suggest this for older YA readers and adults. Enjoy!

Excerpt from Elsker:

“Are you sure you will be all right on the stairs?” Ull stood in the grand hall of Cardiff Castle, glancing at the four-inch, shiny death-traps Victoria called shoes. Since Ull’s eyes practically bugged out of his face when he picked me up, I had no intention of changing into the emergency flats I’d stuck in my purse. Victoria had scored another hit.
“Probably not. Walk behind me in case I fall?”
          “It would be my pleasure.”
“On our right, the coats of arms,” continued the tour guide. He’d been talking for a good five minutes and I couldn’t remember a single word. That was because Ull had started stroking the small of my back when our tour began, and it took all my concentration just to stay upright.
“The castle is gorgeous.” I admired the stonework as we made our way toward the stairs. There I shifted focus to my feet, staring at each step until I’d reached the top. “Made it.”
“And I was so hoping I would get to catch you.” Ull came up next to me and skimmed my hand with the pads of his fingers.
“Well, the night is young and these shoes are high. You may still get your chance.”
          “Tease.” Ull kissed my palm.
“Um.” I swayed on the heels and he chuckled.
“Come, Miss Tostenson. We are losing the group.”
          “Right.”
We walked the long corridor framed with paintings. All of the history in these walls was kind of overwhelming. The castle was two thousand years old. The oldest thing we had back in Nehalem was probably the Homestead. Cardiff Castle had about eighteen hundred years on that farm.
“This place is huge,” I whispered when we’d caught up to the tour. “I can’t imagine living here. How could you ever get comfortable?”
“You get used to it,” Ull shrugged. “Find little corners to make your own.”
“How on earth could anyone get used to all of this?”
“When you are stuck in it every day it gets old. Trust me.”
“Right.” Like Ull was an authority on royal dwellings. “Living in a castle sounds sooo terrible.”
          “Depends on the day.”
          “What does that mean?”
“Just that these walls did more than keep people out -- they kept people in, too.”
I thought about my vision from Friday night -- of Ull and me in a meadow by a castle. Huh.
“Where did you say your family lived, exactly?” I probed.
But Ull bristled. I’d hit a nerve. “Come Kristia, we have lost our group again.” He gently pulled me down the hall.
“You may have noticed the Animal Wall in front of the Castle. Though William Burges designed the Wall in 1866, it was not constructed until 1890 -- nine years after Burges’s death.” The guide lifted an eyebrow as we caught up.  “Please do try to stay with the tour,” he admonished before turning down another corridor. The rest of the group followed closely.
          “Sorry.” I ducked my head.
Ull raised a corner of his mouth in a smile. “Why, Kristia, you are blushing.”
“And?” I lifted my chin, and took a step back so I stood against the wall.
“It is sweet.”  Ull paused and lifted a finger to my cheek. My knees buckled and he grabbed my arm to steady me. The touch sent shockwaves straight to my head, leaving me with the unnerving sensation of being underwater. I lost my bearings again and Ull wrapped both hands around my waist to stop my fall.
“Sorry,” I mouthed. “Must be the shoes.” I couldn’t stop staring at his eyes. They almost looked nervous.
“Must be.” He ran his finger along my jaw, stopping to grasp my chin between his thumb and forefinger. His eyes focused on my mouth and my heartbeat accelerated. He ran his thumb lightly over my lips. They parted under his touch. A wave of heat shot from my lower lip straight to my abdomen, creating a slow burn that wasn’t altogether uncomfortable. I watched as his eyes slowly moved down then back up, lingering at the neckline of my dress. Victoria had been right about the push-up bra.
          “Must be,” I repeated.
Ull drew his eyes away from my cleavage and took a step closer. He leaned one forearm against the wall, leaving me enveloped between the cold stone and his warm chest. I was suddenly very dizzy.
“Kristia,” he spoke in a whisper.
“Yes?” I whispered back. Ull was looking at me with an intensity I wasn’t prepared for. He stepped in, closing the last inch between us.
“Look at me.” He spoke again, lifting my chin so my lips were tilted towards his. If his body hadn’t been pressed against mine, I would have collapsed in a heap that instant. Instead, I took a shaky breath as Ull dropped his head. He ran his nose along my jaw line, pausing when he reached my ear. He breathed in, the cool air sending a shiver down my neck. With painstaking slowness he drew his nose across my cheek until our lips were almost touching. Now when I looked into his eyes I saw something entirely different. He was strong. Confident. And very much in control.
I let out a small sigh and immediately he covered my mouth with his. It wasn’t a gentle kiss -- it was commanding, almost forceful. I melted against him as he claimed my lips, moved down my jaw to consume my neck. My insides throbbed. In that moment, I would have done absolutely anything he asked me to.
          “Kristia,” he whispered again.
“Mmm.” It was the best I could muster by way of response.
“I think we need to stop.”
          In God’s name, why?
“Will you be joining the rest of my tour, or shall I leave the two of you here?” The guide stood at the end of the corridor, literally tapping his foot. Oops.
Ull placed his hands around my waist to right me. I smoothed my hair and straightened my dress, my cheeks burning the whole time.
“Great timing,” I muttered. Just when things were getting good.
“Do not worry Kristia.” Ull winked. “We have all the time in the world.”
          I sure hoped so.

Title: Killing Ruby Rose (The Ruby Rose Series #1)
Author: Jessie Humphries
Publisher: Skyscape, 300 Pages (May 1st, 2014)
From: the Author
Format: eARC
Add to: Goodreads
Order a copy: Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Amazon UK

Synopsis: In sunny Southern California, seventeen-year-old Ruby Rose is known for her killer looks and her killer SAT scores. But ever since her dad, an LAPD SWAT sergeant, died, she's also got a few killer secrets.

To cope, Ruby has been trying to stay focused on school (the top spot in her class is on the line) and spending time with friends (her Jimmy Choos and Manolo Blahniks are nothing if not loyal). But after six months of therapy and pathetic parenting by her mom, the District Attorney, Ruby decides to pick up where her dad left off and starts going after the bad guys herself.

When Ruby ends up killing a murderer to save his intended victim, she discovers that she's gone from being the huntress to the hunted. There's a sick mastermind at play, and he has Ruby in his sights. Ruby must discover who's using her to implement twisted justice before she ends up swapping Valentino red for prison orange.

With a gun named Smith, a talent for martial arts, and a boyfriend with eyes to die for, Ruby is ready to face the worst. And if a girl's forced to kill, won't the guilt sit more easily in a pair of Prada peep-toe pumps?

Review: 3 Stars - Killing Ruby Rose is the first title in the Ruby Rose Series from debut author Jessie Humphries and takes readers on one bumpy, thrilling, mysterious and dangerous ride for a high schooler who’s looking for closure and answers.

Teenage Ruby Rose if one smart cookie and has her eye on the top spot at school. Along with her epic shoe collection she’s ready to take on the world. With a best friend by her side to help her come to terms with the death of her father, Ruby is hiding a somewhat alter-ego which takes her into somewhat of an extremely dangerous game which quickly spirals out of control.

One thing about Ruby is she is tough. She’s trained in martial arts and knows her way around a gun. She owns her own along with a permit to carry. And while she believes she’s prepared to tackle her secret side project she’s working on in memory of her father, she’s quickly going to find out just how far out of her league she truly is.

I liked Ruby, stupid choices and all, I liked her. She reminded me just a smidge of Veronica Mars - more so how she followed and watched her prey and her case files… but Ruby was a bit reckless when you compare the two. Both characters also have fathers in law enforcement so that was another small bit where I could see a small similarity. I LOVE Veronica Mars so having a chance to see even the slightest comparison between characters is a plus.. however in the end I didn’t LOVE this one as I love VM.

The part in the story that rubbed me the wrong way time and time again was Ruby’s mother. I hated the lies. I hated how absent she was in her life and I hated her part in Ruby’s story. The hate percolated just under the surface from beginning and that boil grew until it finally exploded at the end of the book. This is one of those stories where the parent is an epic failure and I hated her. Which you can say if an author can illicit such strong feelings in a reader that’s huge props to the author, and I’d more than agree with this, yet it went way too far and there was just no coming back.

The love interest in the story was prefect! Just what she needed and I loved these two together. However these was time I found even HIM creepy beyond creepy and wondered what the heck was up with him! I didn’t know if he was part of it all or not???

One thing the author did do very well was create a great base character(s) for the continuing story. I have no idea where she might go next and what might happen but I am curious to find out. Oh and there’s some humorous moments to this one too. Ruby is without a doubt quirky at times and I look forward to more of that from her in the next book.

All in all this one was very entertaining and suspenseful, the characters had their ups and downs but the twists and turns made up for some of the rough bits. I think readers of YA and fans of mysterious and stories with suspense will love this one. The second book – Resisting Ruby Rose is set to release late October 2014. Enjoy!

"Waiting On" Wednesday is an event hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine. The purpose of this weekly event is to spotlight a soon-to-be-released book that you are very much anticipating. "Waiting On" Wednesday will also give bloggers an opportunity to share ideas for our TBR lists.

Title: Say What You Will
Author: Cammie McGovern
Publisher: HarperTeen, 352 Pages (June 3rd, 2014)
Add to: Goodreads
Pre-order here: Amazon, Barnes and Noble, The Book Depository, Amazon UK

Synopsis: John Green's The Fault in Our Stars meets Rainbow Rowell's Eleanor & Park in this beautifully written, incredibly honest, and emotionally poignant novel. Cammie McGovern's insightful young adult debut is a heartfelt and heartbreaking story about how we can all feel lost until we find someone who loves us because of our faults, not in spite of them.

Born with cerebral palsy, Amy can't walk without a walker, talk without a voice box, or even fully control her facial expressions. Plagued by obsessive-compulsive disorder, Matthew is consumed with repeated thoughts, neurotic rituals, and crippling fear. Both in desperate need of someone to help them reach out to the world, Amy and Matthew are more alike than either ever realized.

When Amy decides to hire student aides to help her in her senior year at Coral Hills High School, these two teens are thrust into each other's lives. As they begin to spend time with each other, what started as a blossoming friendship eventually grows into something neither expected.

Title: Dissonance (Dissonance #1)
Author: Erica O'Rourke
Publisher: Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers, 496 Pages (July 22nd, 2014)
Add to: Goodreads
Pre-order here: Amazon, Barnes and Noble, The Book Depository, Amazon UK

Synopsis: Delancy Sullivan has always known there’s more to reality than what people see. Every time someone makes a choice, a new, parallel world branches off from the existing one. Eating breakfast or skipping it, turning left instead of right, sneaking out instead of staying in bed ~ all of these choices create an alternate universe in which an echo self takes the road not travelled and makes the opposite decision. As a Walker, someone who can navigate between these worlds, Del’s job is to keep all of the dimensions in harmony.

Normally, Del can hear the dissonant frequency that each world emits as clear as a bell. But when a training session in an off-key world goes horribly wrong, she is forbidden from Walking by the Council. But Del’s not big on following the rules and she secretly starts to investigate these other worlds. Something strange is connecting them and it’s not just her random encounters with echo versions of the guy she likes, Simon Lane.

But Del’s decisions have unimaginable consequences and, as she begins to fall for the Echo Simons in each world, she draws closer to a truth that the Council of Walkers is trying to hide ~ a secret that threatens the fate of the entire multiverse.

Another week, another two books I cant wait for! Oh who am I kidding? Keeping my weekly WoW's to two or three books is always hard to do but I managed this week with another set that I can't wait for! Say What You Will is a MUST read for me! Thankfully it comes out next week!!! YAY!!!

And then look at the cover for Dissonance. Then read the synopsis with alternate universes, parallel worlds... YES PLEASE!

What do you think of my picks this week and what books are YOU waiting on?

-BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn't give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)

Title: The Space Beyond (The Book of Phoenix #2)
Author: Kristie Cook
Publisher: Ang'dora Productions, LLC, (March 2014)
Add to: Goodreads
Pre-order here: Amazon, Barnes and Noble, The Book Depository, Amazon UK

NOTE: This is a "New Adult" novel. Due to mature content this title is recommended for ages 17+

Synopsis: As members of the Phoenix, Jeric and Leni are thrust into their new lives, expected to lead Earth’s Guardians. But Leni struggles with trusting her own soul, and Jeric is more concerned about keeping Leni safe than meeting others’ demands. When Darkness swarms Lake Haven, they embark on their first mission with little preparation and no idea which soul the Dark hunts.

Born and raised in Lake Haven, Bex hopes to escape her small-town life, ideally in the arms of her soul mate. She knows he exists, and her heart aches with the need to find him. When her long-lost mama calls to announce she's knockin' on death's door, Bex reluctantly makes the trip to see the uncaring bitch (bless her heart), only to be knocked off her feet by the sexy and charming Dr. Mason Hayes. Is he really The One?

Leni’s soul felt an instant connection to Bex, but if Bex found her soul mate, she isn’t their mission. So who is, and why does Leni instinctively feel drawn to her? Can Leni even trust her intuition? And will Jeric step up and lead when the time comes orcontinue to hold them back?

If they don't learn to trust themselves and each other quickly, Darkness will claim them all…along with the rest of Earth’s souls.

A sigh from Leni rippled through our soul. It wasn't for me or my sarcasm, through. She'd picked up on Mat's snark factor, too.
"This shift won't do us any good," she said so only I could hear as we traveled to the Gate.
"Too late to back out now," I told her, then gave her a mental squeeze and added, "We'll just have to make it worth our time after."
A vision of her naked boy trembling as she straddled me played in our minds. Sex in this state made everything else work it.
"Do you ever think of anything else?" she teased.
"Only when I'm forced to." -- Leni & Jeric taken from the eARC at about 8% into the book.
