Let the Wars Begin: Its now time to make our decision, let's see what we think about the covers and pick our favorite cover.

Lisa This week we're featuring a book that I haven't yet heard of and it's funny how these two covers are so similar yet so very different. From the models right down to the colors and the font, it's so much the same and different at the same time.

However we much pick only one and my gut says the US cover is more visually appealing to this book lover. It feels more polished and finished than the UK cover.

I like the flow and movement of the US cover as well, yet when you look at the UK cover the wave in the background just doesn't feel like it fits. It feels out of place. While I'm going to assume it's fitting for the story, it looks so out of place here.

So, it's a US win for me. Which one wins your vote?

Michelle I've chosen Truthwitch for this weeks post, because for me, there has only ever been the one cover for me. The UK has some nice artwork, and has some bright colours to draw your attention, but for me it's the US cover that wins every time. I love how dramatic and magical it feels, I love the pose for the model, as well as all of the background imagery. It really feels like you can reach in and feel the water on your hands, the breeze on your face. It's a US win for me this week, don't forget to elt us know which cover gets your vote.

What are your plans for Halloween?

Piper: I plan to decorate the Underworld. Maybe try to make it a bit scarier, especially at the entrance. People should be scared when they come here. They should be scared about how they’re going to get judged.

Can you tell me a bit about the last scary movie you watched? (Were you alone? What snacks you had? What movie you watched? Did it scare you, etc.)

Piper: It was some scary movie about how global warming was killing the earth. And the cities were building domes overhead to keep the heat out. And terrorists were fighting the government. It was horrible. (And it happens to be my real life. Yikes!)

 Would you ever want to spend the night in a haunted location? If so, why?

Gina Covello (from the Vamped series): Been there, done that in Fangtabulous.  If the ghost is murderous, clinically insane, bent on possessing my boyfriend or all of the above, I’m gonna have to say hell to the no.

Tori Karacis (from the Latter-Day Olympians series): Bring it on.  So far I’ve fought down gods, goddesses, titans and other terrors.  Ghost, hah!  Full on poltergeists and you might have me shaking in my boots.

3 or more of your characters – please discuss various candies and why they love it.

Does it have to be candies?  Sweets I’ve got.

Gina: Mochachino for the win! Cocoa and caffeine, can’t beat it.  Unfortunately, my all-liquid diet is now limited to blood, so to get my fix, I have to stalk the occasional Starbucks.

Bobby Delvecchio (Gina’s above mentioned boyfriend): Gummy bears.  I don’t know what the heck flavor they are, but the light yellow are the best.  Pina colada?  Pineapple?  Whatever, there’s a definite order to eating gummy bears, starting with the green and moving on through orange, dark yellow, red and finally, my favorite.  I like to save the best for last.

Tori: Oh, sorry, my mouth was full!  Chocolate croissants.  Hands down.

What are your plans for Halloween?

We’re having a Harvest dance, and I’m in charge of the apple bobbing basin! But I think apple bobbing is way too easy, don’t you? So I’ve invented the Apple Sucker, which will stir the water and suck the apples down to the bottom of the basin. As long as nobody drowns, it’ll be a lot of fun.

You don’t think anybody will drown, do you? I’d get grounded for sure.

Can you tell me a bit about the last scary movie you watched? (Were you alone? What snacks you had? What movie you watched? Did it scare you, etc.)

I don’t know what a movie is—we don’t have those in 1914. But I did read an Amazing Stories about an evil Egyptian pharaoh who kidnapped Lana Powers, and Dirk Knifely had to go and save her. That pharaoh chap gave me the willies!

What are your plans for Halloween?

We’ve got an All Hallow’s Eve Derby Match—the Apocalypsies against the Tilt-a-Girls. We’re going to stomp their derby butts, and then Michael and I are dressing up as angels and going trick-or-treating. He’s never done it since he’s not really human and all. So I predict I’ll be on a total sugar high for about the next month. Which is awesome.

Can you tell me a bit about the last scary movie you watched? (Were you alone? What snacks you had? What movie you watched? Did it scare you, etc.)

My sister made me watch one of those romance movies; does that count? Because it was HORRIFYING. All the kissy faces and the angsting made me want to smack my head against the wall. I don’t really watch horror movies any more, though. They’re either really bad, or they give me demon flashbacks. Once you’ve seen the real thing, you don’t really feel like watching it for fun, you know?

Yes, Tulip would love to! Tulip and her best warlock friend, Dexter, love to ghost hunt so spending the night in a haunted location would be a dream come true! They could use all his cool spy scopes and ghost cameras to capture some live footage. Their only unsolved case (to date) is why the witches of Poison Ivy coven all died together. On the same day. While drinking coffee in the attic.

Morgan: Chocolate covered honey nuggets are the best candy ever.

Sienna: Sorry, but you’re both wrong. Otis Skullmeister cookies are the best.

Tulip: Um, aren’t we talking about candy?

Morgan: I guess I should drop the chocolate covered honey nuggets and vote for my mom’s cookies. I would have voted for her if the question hadn’t specifically asked about candy.

Tulip: Your mom’s the Otis Skullmeister cookie master?

Morgan: Yeah, she loves baking.

Sienna: Cool, huh?

Tulip: Way cool. Think you could score me a batch of oatmeal toffee chocolate chunk, Morgan? I’d love to give my associates at Spells & Spies a new treat after we solve our next case.

Another three titles this week! The Liberator... LOVED the Collector, so it was a no brain-er that I'd be excited for this one. Thankfully we don't have to wait long until it's out AND I'm excited because I have this one on my Kindle to read after I finish two books I'm working on! YAY!!! Halloween, with Face Paints and Duct Tape

My family is big into Halloween. Big into homemade costumes. My mom often thought it would be adorable if we all went around together in a themed group—I'm the oldest of 4, but we're pretty well spaced apart, with 12 years between me and the youngest. So her wish only happened once – two friends of ours were Dorothy and the Scarecrow, I was the Tin Man, my younger brother (sibling #2) was the Cowardly Lion, and my sister (sibling #3) was dressed in the ubiquitious yellow dog costume we all wore as a baby and declared to be Toto.

I was fond of exactly three things—books, theatre. . .and art. So I was always drafted to help with Halloween, of course. One year, sibling #2 wanted to go as the Energizer bunny (remember those commercials?) Grandmother sewed the pink rabbit costume and I made the drum out of cardboard, paint, and lots of duct tape. (I remember being particularly enamored with the structural possibilities of duct tape.) Later, in an inspired moment, sibling #3 took the pink rabbit costume and went as the Easter Bunny. The year after that, Mrs. Santa Claus.

At some point mom got me a face painting kit and signed me up to volunteer for everyone else's school carnivals. Which actually I loved—I like being on the inside of things. I like being in the place where the magic happens, even if that means you see all the greasepaint and sawdust and sweat. Then naturally, eventually, the face paints came out at Halloween. I spent an hour one year transforming fairly-patient sibling #3 into a monarch butterfly. And a couple years later, into a leopard.

When my husband and I moved to Portland, I was poking around on Craigslist and I ran across a professional face painter who was working the Rose Festival (our big 3-week fair) and needed an assistant. She told me later that she got tons of applications. But mine came with those two photos of my sister. I didn't tell her they'd taken me an hour each to do. (An hour? OMG, you'd get slaughtered by the lines of children. . .or at least by their parents.) That's how I got into face painting—and shortly thereafter became significantly faster.

In recent years, sibling #4 has dressed up for Halloween as The Riddler and Dr. Strangelove. Even more recently, he got some face paints and went to ComicCon dressed as Two-Face. The more families grow up and change, the more everything stays the same. . . .

Review: 4 Stars - Personal Demons, the first book in the trilogy with the same name by author Lisa Desrochers was just the book I was looking for and then some. Alternating points of view, good vs. evil, a bad boy and a good guy… Yep, just what I was looking for.

Frannie is the female protagonist in this title. She’s your average teen girl in high school. However, that quickly changes with the arrival of two guys. First there’s Luc, the ultimate bad boy x 10. He’s dark, mysterious, bad boy through and through. The two points of view throughout the book are between Frannie and Luc and as I’ve mentioned in previous reviews I love points of view from different characters while reading. It always gives me such a richer and more rounded story when you get to see things from two different personalities especially when it’s a girl and a guy. Then we have Gabe, the good guy – through and through. He wants nothing more than to keep Frannie safe from those around her (mostly Luc ) and from herself.

The book tells of how people or more so, their souls are ‘tagged’ for Heaven or Hell. It’s all about temptations and choices that happen throughout your life that bring you to the attention of one side or another. At some point in your life you get tagged for either Heaven or Hell and once that’s done there’s no going back. You are then truly stuck with the choices you’ve made in life. You just don’t know it until you pass on to either side. So, both of these guys are sent to try to ‘win’ Frannie’s soul. They have rules they must follow, but in the end only one can tag her.

Desrochers sure does know how to write a swoonable bad boy! I mean Gabe’s not bad, but I tend to fall for quality bad boys, so Luc had me right from the start.

All in all, I was really impressed by the writing and the characters. I found the twists and turns to be thrilling and the ending more than I could have imagined. This is a fantastic start to the series and I’m looking forward to more from Desrochers in the future. She’s defiantly an author to be on the look-out for in the future. A worth wile read, without a doubt.
