I'm really excited to have Jenn here on my blog today and was lucky to have the chance to interview her and learn more about not only her, but also her Light Series and the characters within her books.

What is your favorite part about the writing process? What is the hardest part?

My favorite part of the writing process is when I really fall into the story and am feeling the emotions, walking in the footsteps of the characters. I don’t know how it happens, but I’m so thankful that it does. My least favorite part of the process is writer’s block! I think all authors go through periods where, even when you love your characters, you need a push to meet deadline. Sometimes it takes a little while to fall head over heels into the story.

What inspired you to write the Light series?

A couple of things. For one, I had wanted to write a book for a long time, and I was feeling a very strong stirring to create something fun and creepy but still grounded in the spiritual ideals that I’d been studying for a while. I told myself, you have to write one page a day—just one—and by the end of the year you’ll have a novel. Well, it went a lot faster than I’d thought once I was smitten with the world. I couldn’t stop writing it, in fact. You had to tear me away from my laptop! Once I was done with Seers, I knew that I needed to share it. I was passionate about the whole idea of the story, about people knowing that they have a unique purpose and destiny for their lives. I wanted readers to be brave and feel enthusiasm and hope. Book two, Whisper of Light, was a continuation of that idea.

In the first two books in your Light series, you introduce us to some strong characters - both male and female – can you tell us what you love about each of your leads?

I’m assuming that you mean Christian, Lily, William and Nicole. These characters are definitely strong, but in very different ways. There are so many means of feeling and displaying strength, and while they can all be flawed, they’re all needed.

Christian Wright is a combination of hot-headedness, old fashioned charm, arrogance and extreme protectiveness. I love that he’s means well and loves so hard and would lay his life down for you in an instant.

Lily Hunt is passionately emotional. She can be a handful, and her gifts mean that she has the tendency to let others’ emotions influence hers… at first, but that same gift means that she can see through lies and misunderstandings, as well.

William Maddox has kind of become a favorite amongst the readers. It’s funny, because his character was a real wild card for me when I first began Seers. I love that William is a little hard to read at the start, because his character is understated. I always say he’s a corner lurker, avoids the spotlight. I also love that William tends to be a bit of a smart ass. ;)

Nicole Abbot is, perhaps, the mousiest of all the characters, but that’s hardly indicative of a quiet mind. I love the fact that, despite all of her problems, she knows how to care deeply and make fun of her own misery.

Can you share with us your favorite line or two from BOTH Seers of Light and Whisper of Light?

“Do you intend to get any closer, or is arm’s length the new black?” – William Maddox, Seers of Light

“Taking a step forward, I stood in the light, tilted my head back and closed my eyes. It held my face and wrapped its arms around my shoulders, and for the very first time, I let hope in.” – Lily Hunt, Seers of Light

“My God, you’re weird.”

“Nowadays it’s called unique, Nicole,” he defended.

“My God, you’re unique.”

“That’s better.”

~Nicole Abbot and Gilford Boyd, Whisper of Light

“Back to the grave allegro of Beethovan’s mind I went, back to the reverie of its melancholy and soft, entreating arms. Right now, my soul understood its purpose here. It was content and fulfilled. And as I played, something -- and I would contemplate this with much frustration afterwards -- whispered on the edge of my understanding.” – Nicole Abbot, Whisper of Light

Some of the subject matter in Whisper of Light is a bit on the sad side, was it hard for you to write about such an emotional journey that one of the main characters takes?

It was and it wasn’t. I think, to some degree, most of us can relate to feeling inferior and undeserving, so it wasn’t tough to conjure those emotions, but I’ve railed against those same beliefs for a long time, so it was painful to let myself feel the way the main protagonist feels so that I could write her properly. Still, it was important that I did. We all need to know and trust in our own right to happiness.

What do you hope readers take away from both Seers and Whisper?

I want very, very much for readers to come away from the series with a strong sense of hope and passion about their own lives. We get stuck in a rut and we think it’s too late or too hard or even impossible to pursue our own dreams and live our purpose, but that’s not the case. It’s never, ever too late to be brave enough to be happy.

If any of the characters from the books popped into this interview now and had something to say, who would it be and what do you think they’d want to tell us?

Wow. What great questions, Well, I think it would Ginny. She’d want to tell you that she just got a new bag of worry stones and she’s dying to show them off. Anybody interested?

Can you tell us any details about what’s to come in the future for the Light Series?

I am currently working on book three, which will bring the series full circle. That’s not to say that I wouldn’t approach the Seers world again in future, but I think after the third novel I’ll probably work on a new project.

Thanks so much for stopping by Jennifer - We hope you’ll come back and visit again soon!

Thank you for having me! I enjoyed your questions! xoxo

Title: Whisper of Light (Light, #2)
Author: Jennifer DeLucy
Publisher: Omnific Publishing, (October 26th 2010)
From: the Author & Publisher, Thank You!

Synopsis: The saying goes that all men are created equal... but Nicole Abbot knows better. Lacking the supernatural gifts of the Sentients she has known all her life, Nicole has lived with her nose pressed to the glass, withering beneath the guilt of her own inadequacies and the disapproving glare of her father. It's easy to believe that the universe has forgotten all about her, but things are not always as they seem. With the arrival of Christian Wright, a handsome but complex Combatant with a troubled history, Nicole is forced to question everything she has ever believed about herself, proving that sometimes, our most flawed perceptions are those reflected in a mirror.

Review: 4.5 Stars - Jennifer DeLucy’s Light series continues with its second installment in Whisper of Light. If you haven’t read Seers of Light (Light, #1), first off – what are you waiting for? And secondly – this review might include some spoilers, so be prepared, some might be unintentionally included.

With DeLucy’s ever present beautiful writing, story and some of the characters from the first book that we know and love returning in Whisper of Light, I sat down and didn’t get up until I had devoured each and every page of this book. With such a strong story, characters and writing, what’s not to fall in love with here?

In Whisper of Light we meet a new type of heroine – Nicole. She’s unlike the Sentients she was born, raised and still lives with – she was born into this different life without any Endowments or supernatural gifts. She’s quiet and somewhat stand offish and lives life with more than just that burden. She’s under a huge amount of stress and weight on her shoulders and a huge part of that comes from her father, who is really a piece of work and to this reader, she kind of felt like a stranger in her own skin as she tries to live and cope with just being… well normal.

I enjoyed reading Nicole because to me she struck home time and time again. She’s one of those characters who so many people will be able to relate to. The questioning of one ’s self and where they fit into the world, and how they feel so different from everyone around them really were key points that even I found myself deeply understanding.

Then we have Christian who has come to live with a new Sentient group to try to heal himself from the past. Again, you need to read Seers to understand just why Christian ventures so far from home. It’s through Christian we get to see some of the real Nicole and through Nicole we in turn get to see some of the real Christian. Those points in the book are few and far between, but I felt that was the point – again DeLucy with amazing pacing and timing showed that, well, to change and see something from a different point of view about yourself doesn’t happen overnight.

That’s one thing that I think DeLucy has hit the nail on the head with. She’s patient with her story telling and allows her characters to fully grow and come to terms with things in a way that we can all fully understand. Her characters personalities aren’t all that far from true and can be found in just about each person if we take the time.

All in all DeLucy is, in my eyes a writer who has amazing amounts of talent and who I for one will be waiting on pins and needles for the next book in the Trilogy. Anything she writes for that matter, I’ll be eager to get my hands on. I’ll be sad to see it end but will forever keep my fingers crossed that maybe someday her Sentients will talk to her again. So, for now… everyone hurry up and read both her books. You won’t be sorry! The third book in the Light Series looks to be released sometime late Spring. *softly nudges Jenn back to her computer to hurry up and write the next book!*

Title: What Happened to Goodbye

Preorder here: Amazon, Borders, Barnes and Noble, The Book Depository

Synopsis: What Happened to Goodbye is about a high school senior who, after her parents’ divorce, has taken up the practice of assuming a new identity in each of the four towns she’s lived in.

Title: The Piper's Son
Author: Melina Marchette
Publisher: Candlewick Press, 336 Pages (March 8th 2011)

Synopsis: The award-winning author of Finnikin of the Rock and Jellicoe Road pens a raw, compelling novel about a family’s hard-won healing on the other side of trauma.

Award-winning author Melina Marchetta reopens the story of the group of friends from her acclaimed novel Saving Francesca - but five years have passed, and now it’s Thomas Mackee who needs saving. After his favorite uncle was blown to bits on his way to work in a foreign city, Tom watched his family implode. He quit school and turned his back on his music and everyone that mattered, including the girl he can’t forget. Shooting for oblivion, he’s hit rock bottom, forced to live with his single, pregnant aunt, work at the Union pub with his former friends, and reckon with his grieving, alcoholic father. Tom’s in no shape to mend what’s broken. But what if no one else is either? An unflinching look at family, forgiveness, and the fierce inner workings of love and friendship, The Piper’s Son redefines what it means to go home again.

I'm really excited for both of these books. First off, I love Sarah Dessen. Anything she writes, I'll read it, so this is a hands down MUST read. As for the Piper's Son - I really enjoyed Saving Francesca and am eager to find out more about the characters from that story.

Title: Seers of Light (Light, #1)
Author: Jennifer DeLucy
Publisher: Omnific Publishing, 396 pages (February 16th 2010)
From: Purchased from the Publisher.

Synopsis: Lillian Hunt has never truly lived. Always sensing more to the world than is easily perceived, she fears that her instincts are stubborn flights of fancy, or worse, mental instability. But some things—disappearing strangers, tangible dreams, and visits from malevolent creatures—cannot be ignored. Before it's too late, Lillian is ripped from the only existence she’s ever known and thrust into a reality that she always suspected, but could scarcely believe. She must learn the truth about who she is, the powerful beings that wish to destroy her, and the two men who would die to protect her.

Review: 4.5 Stars - Simply put, Seers of Light By Jennifer DeLucy is beautiful. The writing flows off the page, the characters are more than memorable and the story utterly unique – easily making this a must read book for any lover of Paranormal books as a whole.

When Lillian Hunt has some strange things happening around her, she doesn’t know just what to do or who to tell. For fear her family and friends would think she’s unstable she tends to keep all the unexplained things to herself. She’s extremely independent and feisty. With a strong spirit and good head on her shoulders she wants nothing more than to be happy and live a peaceful life. To bad that’s not in the stars for Lily.

Before she knows it’s, she’s living a life she never dreamed of. With people who are strangers, yet seem to know her better than she knows herself… and with the all the unexplained things that happened to her in the past, she now finds more answers then she cold have ever dreamed of.

With a cast of characters who DeLucy has written to all complement each other – and two strong male leads – William, the strong silent type who feels to be more then just an outcast of the group; and Christian who’s the fierce protector – both fighting for Lily’s attention…. Let’s just say it’ll have readers busy fighting over Team William or Team Christian.

The relationships built throughout this first in a trilogy were well placed and paced. The relationship between Lily and her chosen guy – William or Christian – worked well with the flow of the story. You could see just when the spark caught and were able to watch it grow to a strong roaring fire and I loved how it all happened in its own time. There was no rushing, as many books seem to do.

The last few chapters of the book were very emotional, especially that last page or two – not just in reading it, but DeLucy did a wonderful job creating a story where, for me as a reader, I was able to feel the characters feelings and what they were going through as well.

All in all, DeLucy has a knack for writing. Seers of Light is hands down one of the best books I’ve recently read. With so much to offer any reader who enjoys a paranormal story, with yes a touch of romance in it for a slightly older crowd should not pass this title over. DeLucy is an author everyone should keep their eyes on. Happy Reading!

Title: Born at Midnight (Shadowfalls, #1)
Author: C.C. Hunter
Publisher: St. Martin's Griffin, 416 pages (March 29th 2011)
From: the Publisher, Thank You!

Synopsis: Don’t miss this spectacular new series that will steal your heart and haunt your dreams, Welcome to Shadow Falls camp, nestled deep in the woods of a town called Fallen…

One night Kylie Galen finds herself at the wrong party, with the wrong people, and it changes her life forever. Her mother ships her off to Shadow Falls—a camp for troubled teens, and within hours of arriving, it becomes painfully clear that her fellow campers aren’t just “troubled.” Here at Shadow Falls, vampires, werewolves, shapshifters, witches and fairies train side by side—learning to harness their powers, control their magic and live in the normal world.

Kylie’s never felt normal, but surely she doesn’t belong here with a bunch of paranormal freaks either. Or does she? They insist Kylie is one of them, and that she was brought here for a reason. As if life wasn’t complicated enough, enter Derek and Lucas. Derek’s a half-fae who’s determined to be her boyfriend, and Lucas is a smokin’ hot werewolf with whom Kylie shares a secret past. Both Derek and Lucas couldn’t be more different, but they both have a powerful hold on her heart.

Even though Kylie feels deeply uncertain about everything, one thing is becoming painfully clear—Shadow Falls is exactly where she belongs…

Review: 4.5 Stars -Born at Midnight is the first book in the exciting new Shadow Falls series from author C.C. Hunter. Featuring a strong unique voice from a feisty female lead, myriad of supporting Supernatural characters, a fiery romance with two intriguing guys - mixed all together with a bit of mystery – making Born at Midnight a sure fire hit!

When our main character Kylie gets in trouble for being in the wrong place at the wrong time, she is sent to Shadow Falls, a summer camp for troubled teens. Soon after arriving she finds out the camp isn’t what was first thought. It just so happens that the campers aren’t human, they are Paranormals. Coming face to the face with what should be the impossible; Kylie quickly learns that she just might fit in more then she originally thought. Throwing her into an emotional whirlwind leading to a path to self discovery, Kylie has to figure out, not only who she is, but what she is.

Kylie has a good head on her shoulders, and an inner voice she listens to. I found out a lot about her inner struggles and difficulty with choices, making her an absorbing character.

Much of those choices had to do with the guys in her life. With an ex who’s pretty much a jerk and out of the picture, and the two guys from camp – Lucas a werewolf and the other, Derek a Fae – Kylie has more on her plate then she ever dreamed. Each of these characters was different from one another and I could see either – or both – holding a continuing strong presence in future books within the series. I have to say, let Team Lucas or Team Derek commence!

Her roommates might be a witch and a vampire, but they were typical girls living in close proximity to each other with all the drama that follows. Just add in the fact that they are otherworldly teens and presto, instant love hate relationship. Highlights were this unlikely trio coming together to tackle some bigger issues showing that in the end, they could and would be there for each other when things got messy.

All in all Born at Midnight has a bit of everything. Fans of YA Paranormal will find this a welcome addition to the genre. With her fresh writing and entertaining characters as the building blocks, Hunter has created a solid foundation within her world of Shadow Falls.

Summer camp will never be the same……

Title: Prom & Prejudice
Author: Elizabeth Eulberg
Publisher: Point, 231 pages (January 1st 2011)
From: Point, Thank You!

Synopsis: After winter break, the girls at the very prestigious Longbourn Academy become obsessed with the prom. Lizzie Bennet, who attends Longbourn on a scholarship, isn’t interested in designer dresses and expensive shoes, but her best friend, Jane, might be — especially now that Charles Bingley is back from a semester in London.

Lizzie is happy about her friend’s burgeoning romance but less than impressed by Charles’s friend, Will Darcy, who’s snobby and pretentious. Darcy doesn’t seem to like Lizzie either, but she assumes it’s because her family doesn’t have money. Clearly, Will Darcy is a pompous jerk — so why does Lizzie find herself drawn to him anyway?

Will Lizzie’s pride and Will’s prejudice keep them apart? Or are they a prom couple in the making? Whatever the result, Elizabeth Eulberg, author of The Lonely Hearts Club, has concocted a very funny, completely stylish delight for any season — prom or otherwise.

Review: 5 Stars - Prom & Prejudice by Elizabeth Eulberg was easy to fall in love with. Eulberg’s modern take on Pride and Prejudice was a perfect retelling of the classic story fit for this era. Eulbergs characters and story do justice for Austin’s original telling and had this reader falling head over heels for both the classic and this retelling over and over again.

Our main character Lizzie Bennett is at an exclusive all girls’ private school. Sent there on a scholarship – she faces problems with her fellow classmates at every turn. She’s the outsiders and the ruthless rich kids who also attend never let her forget it. With her friend and roommate Jane by her side, she manages to deal with the onslaught of horrible treatment. Lizzie was a strong character with spunk that never let herself get to down about things. And Jane was a great friend who stuck by her side and was one of very few people who treated Lizzie as an equal.

When Jane’s love interest – Charles – comes back to town, the two introduce her to Will Darcy. He’s a character who’s perfected the brooding, silent type who without a question puts Lizzie right into the same category as everyone else who attends the all girls’ school.

Sadly both Lizzie and Will have prejudices about each other that they have to learn to recognize and see past. And Jane and Charles have some bumps along the way as well. And with Prom creeping close and closer, an event that is more than special to the private schools will each of our four characters be able to find a way through their problems and make it to the be all and end all dance?

I enjoyed the writing and the flow of the story. It was easy reading along and watching the characters struggle and change from beginning to end. Eulberg version of the much loved classic is a perfect read for fans of teen chick-lit. I look forward to reading more from this author in the future. Enjoy!

Title: The Abused Werewolf Rescue Group
Author: Catherine Jinks
Publisher: Harcourt Children's Books, 416 Pages (April 4th 2011)

Synopsis: I still hadn't fully absorbed the terrible possibility that I might actually be a werewolf. A werewolf. I kept stumbling over that word; it made no sense to me. How could I be a werewolf? Werewolves didn't exist.

When Tobias Richard Vandevelde wakes up in hospital with no memory of the night before, his horrified mother tells him that he was found by the police. At Featherdale Park. In a dingo pen.

As if that isn't weird enough, suddenly a very menacing looking guy and a priest show up at his door.

As the mystery unfolds, Toby finds himself keeping company with some very strange and sickly looking people - members of a suburban vampire support group. And when he's abducted in broad daylight, he will need all their help to break free ... and to come to terms with his own incredibly rare condition.

I have to read the first book in this series yet, but they both sound funny which is always a nice change of pace in books. So, I'm looking forward to hopefully reading both books in 2011

Without my incredible readers and blogging friends my blog wouldn't be where it is today. It's because of you that I keep going and have as much fun as I do over the year and a half that I've been blogging.

It's time for another week of In My Mailbox - here's a look at all the great books that arrived on my doorstep either by purchase, trade or for review. It's hosted by Kristi over at The Story Siren. As always, thanks so much for hosting it Kristi!

First off - sorry this is a day late! I wasn't going to do an IMM for these last 4 weeks... I think that's how long it's been since my last one. But I figured I haven't had much time to post in the last week - I've been busy reading! - I figured I might as well catch up and do a Christmas re-cap too. There won't be a picture for this one - sorry. They books are scattered all over my super messy shelves and... well, I'm sure I'll be forgetting something as it is. So, here's the last 4 weeks of IMM's!

Yes... a TON of books! I think I have them all here, though I have a feeling I've missed one or two. Just remember these books have been coming in for the last month PLUS there was a Christmas recap. Talk about an exciting month here! So many great titles, so little time. However, I've been reading like crazy, so there will be a bunch of reviews coming throughout the next few weeks and then some. Keep an eye out for more giveaways as well. What's your week in books been like?

"Waiting On" Wednesday is an event hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine. The purpose of this weekly event is to spotlight a soon-to-be-released book that you are very much anticipating. "Waiting On" Wednesday will also give bloggers an opportunity to share ideas for our TBR lists.

Title: Wake Unto Me
Author: Lisa Cach
Publisher: Speak, 208 Pages, (March 31st 2011)
Preorder here: Amazon, Borders, The Book Depository

Synopsis: A haunted castle, a handsome young man dead for four hundred years, one heck of a scary portrait of a witch, and a treasure hunt -- not to mention a princess for a roommate! -- all await 15 year old American girl Caitlyn Monahan when she earns a scholarship to a French boarding school.

There are secrets behind the stone walls of Chateau de la Fortune, buried for centuries along with the mystery of who killed Raphael, the charming ghost who visits Caitlyn at night. But as Caitlyn unearths the history of the castle, nothing scares her as badly as the secret she learns about herself, and the reason she was chosen to come to the Fortune School.

And nothing breaks her heart as badly as falling in love with a dead guy.

Love this cover for this weeks WoW too! And ghosts... yeah, it's a must read and thankfully I'll be reading this book soon and reviewing closer to the release date.

*covers are always subject to change.

When contacted by CSN Stores last month to hold a giveaway or review an item, I thought it would be great to review something for them from their huge selections of stores. It was tough picking just one thing and I went back and forth on it a while before choosing a great item that the whole family could use.

I choose the Uniflame 24” Wide Aged Bronze Firebowl with Square design.

Being that we like to sit out in the backyard by the pool, I thought this would be perfect for when we have family gatherings. Also, it’s great to, after a bit of cleaning, put in the back of the truck to take out to the desert when watching various family members ride quads and dirt bikes.

After placing the order I was happy with how quickly the item was shipped and how fast it arrived at my door. I was excited when the box came and more than eager to open it up and put it together. How it was packaged was perfect and the box came without any dents or problems so I knew the product was safe.

When we opened up the box and looked at the instructions, which were extremely easy to follow, it was without a doubt a job that one person could do in 10 minutes or so. Two people could do in no time at all.

The assembly went smooth and we had it together before we knew it! It was perfect - just as the picture had shown and the description stated on the CSN Stores Website. The finished product is very sturdy and will be perfect for hanging out in the back yard – roasting marshmallows or as mentioned to take on trips for family gatherings or even camping.

All in all - I’m more than happy with what I was able to find and review from CSN. The overall assembled finished product is great and I’m looking forward to working with them again in the future.
