Synopsis: After winter break, the girls at the very prestigious Longbourn Academy become obsessed with the prom. Lizzie Bennet, who attends Longbourn on a scholarship, isn’t interested in designer dresses and expensive shoes, but her best friend, Jane, might be — especially now that Charles Bingley is back from a semester in London.
Lizzie is happy about her friend’s burgeoning romance but less than impressed by Charles’s friend, Will Darcy, who’s snobby and pretentious. Darcy doesn’t seem to like Lizzie either, but she assumes it’s because her family doesn’t have money. Clearly, Will Darcy is a pompous jerk — so why does Lizzie find herself drawn to him anyway?
Will Lizzie’s pride and Will’s prejudice keep them apart? Or are they a prom couple in the making? Whatever the result, Elizabeth Eulberg, author of The Lonely Hearts Club, has concocted a very funny, completely stylish delight for any season — prom or otherwise.
Review: 5 Stars - Prom & Prejudice by Elizabeth Eulberg was easy to fall in love with. Eulberg’s modern take on Pride and Prejudice was a perfect retelling of the classic story fit for this era. Eulbergs characters and story do justice for Austin’s original telling and had this reader falling head over heels for both the classic and this retelling over and over again.
Our main character Lizzie Bennett is at an exclusive all girls’ private school. Sent there on a scholarship – she faces problems with her fellow classmates at every turn. She’s the outsiders and the ruthless rich kids who also attend never let her forget it. With her friend and roommate Jane by her side, she manages to deal with the onslaught of horrible treatment. Lizzie was a strong character with spunk that never let herself get to down about things. And Jane was a great friend who stuck by her side and was one of very few people who treated Lizzie as an equal.
When Jane’s love interest – Charles – comes back to town, the two introduce her to Will Darcy. He’s a character who’s perfected the brooding, silent type who without a question puts Lizzie right into the same category as everyone else who attends the all girls’ school.
Sadly both Lizzie and Will have prejudices about each other that they have to learn to recognize and see past. And Jane and Charles have some bumps along the way as well. And with Prom creeping close and closer, an event that is more than special to the private schools will each of our four characters be able to find a way through their problems and make it to the be all and end all dance?
I enjoyed the writing and the flow of the story. It was easy reading along and watching the characters struggle and change from beginning to end. Eulberg version of the much loved classic is a perfect read for fans of teen chick-lit. I look forward to reading more from this author in the future. Enjoy!
