Haunted Halloween: Jennifer DeLucy + A Giveaway!

When I was a little girl, I was terrified to be alone at night. In fact, the old house where I lived was so frightening to me that I refused to sleep alone. I’m not sure what it was that disturbed me so. Perhaps it was the creaky old stairs, the musty smell or the many decades old objects that my grandmother collected, or maybe it was more than these. In fact, I’d swear that it was.

There were instances, and plenty of them, that gave me the shivers, but there are two that most stand out in my mind. I can recall lying in bed one night, alone and tense in a state of half-sleep, and waking fully to the sound of those wooden stairs, creaking loudly, one by one, as someone ascended. Now, it was the middle of the night, mind you, and my mother and grandmother should have been long in bed, so, in a determined state to prove that one of them had, indeed, been awake to make the racket, I quickly left my room and headed down the dark, cluttered hallway to inspect.

Both of them were sound asleep.

Assuming I’d somehow imagined or mistaken the blatant sound, I pushed it aside for the moment and returned to bed. I wish I could say this was the end of all things suspicious, but it wasn’t. After a few years, another instance occurred that still shakes me up to this day. I remember, for two nights in a row, I woke to an old woman, with long, straggled hair, and glowing, blood-shot eyes, grinning senselessly from the foot of my bed. Now, I couldn’t even see all of her—she was only visible from the shoulders up—but my reaction must have scared my family, because my mother, upon learning what I’d seen, put her devout Catholicism to good use, and ran into the room with holy water, proceeding to sprinkle the spot where I’d claimed she stood. I’m not sure whether this made things better or worse in my young mind, but I never forgot it—and neither did she.

As I grew older, I ignored the night, the dark, and learned to dampen my fear of the house until I’d long moved out of there and on with my life. It wasn’t until recent years that my suspicions were reaffirmed.

After a while, the house was too much to keep up and my family left, moving to a smaller home just down the street. My brother liked to return to the old house, though, and use it as a kind of solitary hang out. He thought nothing of the practice, apparently sneaking in a back door to watch the black and white television that remained in the dusty living room. He’d done this numerous times with no event, until one day, when he thought he heard someone calling his name. The sound seemed to come from the area of the upstairs, so he shut off the TV and headed for the bottom of the steps, listening intently. Sure enough, the girl called again, this time telling him to come up to his room.

As any reasonable person would do, my brother decided that the best plan of action was to run like his butt was on fire, exiting through the back door and jumping off the deck to the yard. Later, he told me that, if the door had jammed, he surely would have broken a window to escape. There was no question in his mind what had happened. The house was haunted, plain and simple. And I believe him.

These, along with many other such experiences, have contributed to my belief in the unexplainable, the supernatural. You just never know what that bump in the night might be—unless , of course, it makes itself known to you.

Title: Seers of Light (Light, #2)

Synopsis: Lillian Hunt has never truly lived. Always sensing more to the world than is easily perceived, she fears that her instincts are stubborn flights of fancy, or worse, mental instability. Title: Whisper of Light (Light, #2)

Synopsis: The saying goes that all men are created equal... but Nicole Abbot knows better. Lacking the supernatural gifts of the Sentients she has known all her life, Nicole has lived with her nose pressed to the glass, withering beneath the guilt of her own inadequacies and the disapproving glare of her father. It's easy to believe that the universe has forgotten all about her, but things are not always as they seem. With the arrival of Christian Wright, a handsome but complex Combatant with a troubled history, Nicole is forced to question everything she has ever believed about herself, proving that sometimes, our most flawed perceptions are those reflected in a mirror.

  19. This is one seriously scary story, made only scarier by the fact that it really happened to you. I wish I could say that I wholeheartedly did not believe in ghosts and the supernatural/unexplainable, but having lived in a house that I believe (as well as my entire family) is haunted, makes it impossible.

  20. Okay....I think I've officially decided that I MUST, simply MUST, STOP READING THESE POSTS RIGHT BEFORE BED!!!!

    Lol....

Seriously, love them. I LOVE scary, thriller movies and books so these stories are fantastic. BUT they scare me silly! Especially thinking of the dark and ohhhhhh my the dead Indian Chief under the bed in one of the rooms of the creepy old hotel we live behind....that's a WHOLE other story, but for the longest time my sister had me convinced that he was under MY bed (this was when I was younger, let me remind you, lol)!! And if you listen hard enough, you can hear the constant boom, Boom, BOOM oh his ever beating heartbeat!! Bahahaha!! Ooooooo, chills....

Okay gotta try to catch some Z's *wink*
