Synopsis: When having two powers makes you a Super and having none makes you a Normal, having only one makes you a sad half-superpowered freak.

It makes you a One.

Sixteen-year-old Merrin Grey would love to be able to fly – too bad all she can do is hover.

If she could just land an internship at the Biotech Hub, she might finally figure out how to fix herself. She busts her butt in AP Chem and salivates over the Hub’s research on the manifestation of superpowers, all in hopes of boosting her chances.

Then she meets Elias VanDyne, another One, and all her carefully crafted plans fly out the window. Literally. When the two of them touch, their Ones combine to make them fly, and when they’re not soaring over the Nebraska cornfields, they’re busy falling for each other.

Merrin's mad chemistry skills land her a spot on the Hub's internship short list, but as she gets closer to the life she always wanted, she discovers that the Hub’s purpose is more sinister than it has always seemed. Now it’s up to her to decide if it's more important to fly solo, or to save everything - and everyone - she loves.

Guest Post from Merrin and Elias:

HI there, ladies! Thank you so much for having me (and my characters Merrin and Elias) over to your blog today! Music is a big part of Merrin and Elias’s lives, and I think you picked the perfect topic to ask me to write on.

You all asked Merrin and Elias what songs would be on their iPods, but they don’t have those anymore – all their music comes through their cuffs.  Of course, they live in the 22nd century, so they listen to a lot of music we haven’t heard yet, but they also listen to a lot of classic music – vintage stuff, from the 20th and 21st centuries.  So I asked them to focus on those, just so we would know what they were talking about.

Merrin:

Well, I love to play the drums, because they’re loud, and they help to drown out all my stress. It seems crazy that something loud and crazy would calm my thoughts, but it really does. Also, since I play, whenever I listen to a song with a strong drumline, my brain tries to figure out what the drum movements would  be. It keeps my brain busy, which helps because I’m always bored, always wanting to do something. Listening to that kind of music helps keep my brain busy, even if the rest of me isn’t.

Merrin’s picks:

“Stupid Girls”  and “True Love” by P!NK
“The Only Hope for Me Is You” by My Chemical Romance
Anything by ACDC or Green Day
“Everlong” by the Foo Fighters
And even though it’s really slow, I really like “One” by Metallica.
“Who Invited You” by the Donnas is like a personal anthem of mine.

Elias:

I never really loved taking guitar lessons, mostly because I never felt like I was playing anything as awesome as the really great guitar players did. But I do love listening to something intricate and mellow and calm.

Elias’s picks:

“Below My Feet” by Mumford and Sons
Anything by Nick Flora  - that man is an acoustic genius.
“Sinner’s Sonnet” by Andrew Whitman
And even though there’s really no guitar to speak of, I love Owl City’s stuff. It’s so atmospheric, if you really close your eyes and listen it’s like surround-sound relaxation.

Thanks again for having us over! This has been fun!

Merrin, Elias... It's been great having you here today! Thanks for talking music with us!!

About Leigh Ann Kopans:

Raised on comic books and classic novels, Leigh Ann developed an early love of science fiction and literature. As an adult, she rediscovered her love for not only reading, but also writing the types of fiction that enchanted her as a teen. Her debut novel, ONE, is about a girl with only half a superpower, the boy who makes her fly, and her struggle to make herself whole.

Leigh Ann, her husband, and four children live in Columbus, Ohio. When she’s not immersed in the world of fiction, you can find her obsessing over the latest superhero movie or using her kids as an excuse to go out for ice cream (again.)
