But Lenah also just happens to be a recovering five-hundred-year-old vampire queen. After centuries of terrorizing Europe, Lenah is able to realize the dream all vampires have -- to be human again. After performing a dangerous ritual to restore her humanity, Lenah entered a century-long hibernation, leaving behind the wicked coven she ruled over and the eternal love who has helped grant her deep-seated wish.

Until, that is, Lenah draws her first natural breath in centuries at Wickham and rediscovers a human life that bears little resemblance to the one she had known. As if suddenly becoming a teenager weren’t stressful enough, each passing hour brings Lenah closer to the moment when her abandoned coven will open the crypt where she should be sleeping and find her gone. As her borrowed days slip by, Lenah resolves to live her newfound life as fully as she can. But, to do so, she must answer ominous questions: Can an ex-vampire survive in an alien time and place? What can Lenah do to protect her new friends from the bloodthirsty menace about to descend upon them? And how is she ever going to pass her biology midterm?

Review: 4 Stars - Rebecca Maizel made falling in love with this book and her unique twist on Vampires more than easy. With intriguing characters that take you on a journey through the past and the present; in a tale of a 592 year old Vampire and her quest to become human again – makes this beginning of a new Trilogy a must read.

Maizels version of Vampires is unlike any I’ve read about before, adding additional layers to the story and characters. Lenah wants to be human again. Being a Vampire within Maizels world makes it easy for the reader to understand why she would want to become human again. It was interesting to see the flashbacks throughout the whole book and the chance to see where Lenah had come from and the changes she went through when her wish to be human became a reality, with some devastating consequences.

Lenah has a lot to deal with in being not only a 16 year old human girl again, but now living in a time that’s so far removed from what she knows and remembers - it was interesting to read and watch her mind deal with everything, big and small. This was easily one of my favorite parts in the book.

As she starts making new friends in her new life, she comes to realize and learn more and more just what it means to be human again. Tony, the first friend she meets is the artistic guy who sticks to himself. The friendship between these two just fit. Then there’s Justin, the guy that every girl wants - who lives his life to the fullest, even if sometimes he’s a bit of a daredevil. One thing about Justin, it felt he was under some kind of trance when it came to Lenah and that was the only thing I questioned about their relationship or felt was a bit off. However, that soon changed and developed into something that seemed more like fate.

Lenah knows there’s trouble looming as the date gets closer and closer to October 31 – The date she’s suppose to rise from her hibernation. She knows her coven will come after her when they see she’s missing and what will happen to her as a result of becoming human again. After all, she’s got a lot to loose now and she’ll have to fight to keep everything she’s gained in her new life.

With strong characters, an impressive storyline, a new twist on vampires, amazing flashbacks and a cliffhanger ending that had me wishing I had the next book to dive right into, Maizel has me hooked. Fans of vampires who are looking for something new will without a doubt enjoy it. Now the long wait begins for book two.
